The Invisible Man

In Chesterton’s The Invisible Man a murder enters and leaves his house, even though he is under constant observation. One day John Turnbull Angus goes to the bakery where Laura works. He has a crush on her and he absolutely wants to marry her, so he tries to impress her, but she tells him the strange story of two very ugly guys who both wanted to marry her in the past. She did not want to offend them so she said she could not marry them because they were poor. So the guys tried to get rich. One of them succeeded, the other disappeared. So Laura tells the rich guy that she found a threatening note “If you marry him, he'll die.” So John Turnbull and the rich boy meet a detective, Flambeau. But soon there is a strange murder ...
