Later on his house is on fire and when he visits the ruins of it he finds on the wall of his bed the figure of a cat with a rope around its neck. In the following months he begins to regret the loss of the animal and he replaces it with another black cat, without an eye and a with big band on the neck like a rope. The narrator begins to hate that cat until he takes an ax and begins to hit everywhere . When he stops he discovers that he has killed his wife and so he walls up the woman's body in the house. One day the police inspect the home and the crime is discovered because the cat, walled up alive in the tomb of the woman, began to meow.
