It Runs in the Family
Empirical Analyses of Family Background and Economic Status
This volume examines the importance of family background for economic outcomes of both men and women in Finland. The empirical analyses are based on a Finnish data set that originates from the censuses in Finland from 1970 to 1995, and is thoroughly examined. The empirical analyses show, that the estimates for intergenerational and sibling correlations in earnings are relatively low compared to other countries and has been constant in the 1980s and 1990s. The mechanisms behind the intergenerational earnings correlation are also empirically clarified. Furthermore, the correlation in unemployment across generation is examined. There is a clear connection between parents’ and children’s employment status. The results, in this volume, imply that the welfare state and the educational system in particular are important for the economic status of children who have grown up in poor families. The results also show differences between men and women. The relationship between daughters and their parents are weaker than that of sons and their parents. The woman’s own family is more important for her earnings than her family background.
