The Finland Executive Summary 2006 for the eighth-annual Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a cross-national assessment of entrepreneurial activity. Started in 1999 with 10 participating countries, including Finland, the project has expanded to include 42 countries in 2006. GEM’s contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the entrepreneurial process is unique since, to date, no other data set exists that can provide consistent cross-country information and measurements of entrepreneurial activity in a global context. The Finland Executive Summary 2006 introduces the key findings of the assessment of entrepreneurial activity in Finland, particularly in comparison to the other Nordic countries and also in the context of the cross-national results of GEM Global Report. The summary includes the following main themes: scope of entrepreneurial activity ranging from early-stage to established business ownership, individual’s entrepreneurial capacity, type and quality of the new and established businesses in terms of e.g. , sectoral distribution, ownership structure, innovativeness, as well as expected and established growth. The study also discusses the entrepreneurial conditions in Finland and suggests future initiatives for entrepreneurship policy. In 2006 the Finnish GEM study is sponsored by Tekes – Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, and Turku School of Economics.
