Eugene Field’s Joel's Talk With Santa Claus is a Christmas story. It is Christmas Eve, Joel is sad because Christmas has no meaning for him anymore just like when he was a boy and he had a family. Now his baby died and afterwards his wife died of grief. Santa Claus has not forgotten him, however, and on Christmas Eve he comes from the Joel’s chimney and together they remember past Christmases and gifts. Santa Claus finally asks Joel to make poor children happy so that Christmas has a new meaning for him now.
