Bellamy, Edward
Two Days' Solitary Imprisonment
In Edward Bellamy’s With the Eyes Shut the narrator has to undertake a long train journey. A train boy offers him a book to read with his eyes shut, a phonographed book, a brand new invention: technology has reached unimaginable levels. The narrator try this experience, and others, such as the speaking clock. But when he meets his friend Hamage he starts thinking how technology is becoming excessive and still necessary, how it is able to kidnap minds. They go together to a library of phonographed books and they examine the books and their consequences: mothers do not tell stories to children anymore, kids will not learn to read more, printers will not exist anymore...
