Mrs. Medwin

In Henry James’ Mrs. Medwin the protagonist is Mamie Cutter, an American who lives in London. Mamie keeps herself bringing questionable people in social and fashion places in exchange for money. Her brother comes to her apartment looking for a handout.
One case particularly difficult for Mamie is Mrs. Medwin, who is apparently beyond the limit even for the lax standards of English society. But Scott comes to the rescue of Mamie charming the snobbish Lady Wantrigde and inviting Mrs. Medwin at one of her exclusive parties. Mamie collects her fee and Scott gets an unexpected social success...
