Branch Line: The SignalMan
The Signal.man is a story by Dickens; the railway signalman of the title tells the narrator of a ghost that has been haunting him. Each spectral appearance precedes a tragic event on the rail on which he works. The signalman works near a tunnel entrance and he controls the movements of passing trains. Three times, he receives the warning from a spectre that only he can hear. These warnings are followed by the appearance of the ghost, and then by a terrible accident.
The first incident involves a collision between two trains; the second one involves the mysterious death of a young woman on a train. The final warning is a premonition of the signalman’s death.
