In this wellknown story by Poe the narrator describes Ligeia, a beautiful, mysterious and intellectual woman who became ill and died. Later on, the narrator, still griefstricken, marries Lady Rowena Trevanion. The building in which they live is richly furnished and the bedroom is hung with tapestries, which change shape depending on the point of observation.
Haunted by Ligeia's memories, the man starts using opium; he hates his wife who, meanwhile is ill and she hears voices and sees spirits. Lady Rowena gets progressively worse and a few days later she dies and her body is wrapped for burial.
As the narrator keeps vigil overnight, he notices a brief return of colour to Rowena's cheeks. Her body stands and walks into the room. When he touches the figure, her head bandages fall away to reveal that Rowena has transformed into Ligeia...
