Insanity: Murder, Madness, and the Law

Mariclaire Cloutier, executive editor at Oxford University Press, deserves special credit for reshaping my original proposal for this book. Though I wrote the book, it was largely her idea.

Andrea Ott, a law student and soon-to-be Ph.D. in philosophy, spent hundreds of hours diligently discovering, tracking down, and reading the cases, legal documents, transcripts, and other written materials that I used to write this book, and diplomatically dealing with diffi cult librarians and court clerks from around the country. Toward the end of the project, in order to complete her doctoral dissertation, Andrea grudgingly turned the job over to her selfselected successor, Laura Scheestel, who had a hard act to follow. Laura not only continued Andrea’s research but read the manuscript and made valuable suggestions for changes.
