This is neither a history of writing nor a handbook of existing scripts and writing systems. The main questions the book is trying to examine are:
(1) What exactly is the primary purpose of writing?
(2) How does the ability to put down information in permanent form relate to the concept of literacy? and
(3) Does literacy depend on writing?
